JJ Klinac Ltd began operating coach services in 1990 with the purchase of Northliner from Perry Clark of Kawakawa. Northliner was established by Perry Clark in the mid-1980s after deregulation, linking Kaitaia and the Bay of Islands with Auckland via Whangarei. This service competed with the incumbent operator, Railways Road Services.
In 1993, JJ Klinac Ltd bought the Northland Intercity franchise from Whangarei Bus Services, bringing control of major Northland coach operators under common ownership. In 2005, a redistribution of assets within the Klinac family resulted in Northliner, and the Northland Intercity franchise passing to SDK Ltd.
Intercity provided some facilities, such as online booking, for Northliner until late-2008, when SDK Ltd sold the Northliner franchise to Intercity, and they became the sole provider of these. SDK Ltd's fleet was separately branded as Northliner or Intercity, and remained so until 2015, when Northliner coaches were rebranded as Intercity.
In mid-2018, the company's routes and vehicles were passed to other Intercity franchise operators, Ritchies Transport Holdings Ltd and Tranzit Group Ltd.
