Notes:

The "Stadt80" design was further refined with the Pressed Metal Corporation Mark V body, based on the European body, the prototype bus #3071 was delivered in December 1987, this prototype had a different interior fit out compared to the production vehicles, also a much larger destination signs (later refitted with a standard mechanism). The PMC version of the O405 body design featured twin headlights, the European (and Perth) versions had large Bosch headlight units, whereas the Sydney version used the same unit as had featured on the Sydney Mercedes Benz O305, just mounted differently. These were the final buses with the "Sydney" wheelbase of 5.33 metres, this standard went back to the rear platform double deck buses first ordered in the 1930's.
They were delivered to most Sydney depots and originally there were to be 260 of these buses but the last batch was delivered on the then new PMC 160 body, they were most numerous in the Eastern suburbs with Waverley, Randwick and Port Botany at one point operating 111 of these buses. A number of the early buses were delivered in a livery (with a Rivera White base) celebrating the bi centenary of European settlement of Australia in 1988, when they were delivered, some later were painted in the regular "mark V" livery, but a fair proportion of these 16 buses would go on to wear various all over advertising liveries. While this generation of buses had a handful of buses delivered to see service with the premium Sydney Explorer and Airport Express services, a number of these when they were replaced with Mercedes Benz O405's with PMC 160 bodies, plus other regular route buses were sent away and had high back seats fitted, some lost their centre doors, had sound systems fitted were painted in an attractive silver livery and used for charter work, known as "Siilver Service", there were 12 of these vehicles, plus a mk2 Mercedes Benz O305 #2388 and mk4 Mercedes Benz O305 #3081 as well, mainly based out of Burwood depot, but other depots had one or two silver service buses. Three buses from Willoughby depot were painted and had extra mouldings fitted on the outside to resemble a Sydney tram, the interior was also altered to look as such to operate the Tramway service linking Darling Harbour, The Rocks and Circular Quay. A number were also painted in all over livery for the Sydney 2000 Olympic bid
Compressed Natural Gas trial
Buses 3251 and 3252 were delivered with engines powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), and delivered new to Kingsgrove â€“ chosen because of the depots proximity to an AGL facility at the time and these buses were fuelled there early in their lives. The pair remained there long after their diesel counterparts were transferred out (mainly to Newcastle) serving most of their lives at Kingsgrove until they were transferred in mid 2011. At first the engines were coupled with the same Mercedes-Benz W3E112 3 speed transmissions that the other 245 units were delivered with, these were changed out for 5 speed ZF 5HP500 transmissions in 1991.
They would lead to the purchase of another 100 Scania L113 chassis and 555 Mercedes Benz on both the O405NH and O500LE chassis.
Gradually as newer vehicles entered service from 1993, the Mark V's started to be transferred around the system, the Kingsgrove allocation went to Newcastle - via a refurbishment at PMC and repaint into STA corporate livery, Newcastle then received more when Burwood deport received Volvo B10BLE's and when Port Botany received Mercedes Benz O405NH buses. Newcastle ended up with nearly 70 of these buses. Some of the fleet received life-extending refurbishments in the mid 2000's alongside a portion of the Mercedes Benz O305 (mark IV) and some of the MAN SL202 buses. Some of the buses sent to Newcastle would return to see further service in Sydney as Newcastle received new buses.
None of the diesel powered vehicles were withdrawn until early 2013 when they started reaching 25 years of age - for contract purposes a bus is life expired at 25. The CNG prototype pair were withdrawn in 2011 after one suffered a catastrophic transmission failure and the other suffering a catastrophic engine failure and deemed uneconomical to repair. A few years after this, MarkV's started appearing at Kingsgrove depot when the depot was converted to an all diesel depot.
Final run 3374 from Brookvale Depot on the 5:16pm outbound 246 from Wynyard to Spit Junction on Thursday 4th February 2016.

Bus 3106 wore Metroline signage when the route 400 commenced in 1989, it was still in the Bi Centennial livery at the time.
