Notes: After 40 years since the last Leyland "Worldmaster" was delivered to the then Department of Government Transport, the State Transit Authority received it's first Mercedes Benz O405NH with a Custom Coaches "Citaro" body. This was to commence a relationship between Custom Coaches and the State Transit Authority that would see another one thousand vehicles from all the major European chassis manufacturers and being of varying lengths and powered by diesel and gas, being delivered over the next 14 years.
Buses were needed for the Olympic Games in 2000, with the games awarded to Sydney in 1993 there was an effort to expand the State Transit fleet, the Olympics has been billed as "the green games" and efforts were made to ensure there was not excess waste and the venues themselves would have a use after the Olympics had ended. To that end the government wanted vehicles that were accessible and ran off compressed natural gas, up until the mid 90's, there were low floor buses and buses that ran off CNG, but up to that time, low floors ran on diesel, CNG buses were high floor due mainly to the problem of where to locate the gas tanks. By the end of the 1990's designs had evolved whereby the vehicles gas tanks would sit on the roof of the vehicle.

State Transit required 300 new buses in 1998, the contract was awarded to Mercedes Benz who would supply their Citaro body on a O405NH chassis (an Australian only chassis), The body frame and roof was assembled onto the chassis in Germany, at that point the vehicle was shipped to Australia and delivered to Custom Coaches who fitted the panels, glazing, lights and fitted out the interior.
They were delivered first to Ryde depot, followed by Port Botany. Ryde operated their allocation during the Olympics and Paralympics providing athlete shuttle services between the venues at Olympic Park and the Athletes Village (what is now the suburb of Newington) after Port Botany they commenced operating out of Waverley and eventually Leichhardt depots - a handful were trialled at Kingsgrove briefly but an allocation did not go ahead due to operational issues.
These 300 vehicles were delivered between November 1999 and March 2003 and served out of Ryde, Port Botany, Waverley and Leichhardt depots
In 2008, frame cracking started to be noticed on some buses, it was put down to the weight of the gas tanks over the front axle – there had previously been an issue with steering arms prematurely wearing out, bus 1210 was sent back to Germany and Mercedes Benz working out a fix – a brace was added across the window above the front axle. This was progressively done up until late 2010.

Western Sydney Buses
Buses 1389 to 1405 were diverted to be the first bus type used on the Liverpool to Parramatta Transitway which opened in 2003 they featured an altered livery with no upsweep that space being taken up by Tway signage.Buses 1204 to 1209 at Ryde were equipped with transponders for use as extra buses on the Tway, they were based in leased space at Westbus's Bonnyrigg depot, this depot had no CNG facilities so the vehicles had to fuel at either Kingsgrove or Ryde (both at least half an hour away), these were replaced with Euro 3 Volvo B12BLE's in 2004 and buses 1392 to 1400 retained as spares.

Region 6 Franchised
On 1st July 2018, the services in the Sydney Metropolitan Bus Service Contract for Region 6, services operated out of Burwood, Leichhardt, Kingsgrove and Tempe depots were transferred to Transit Systems West Pty Ltd, at the time, this company also operated in Region 3 as well. With this, 50 of the Mercedes Benz O405NH buses operating from Leichhardt depot were transferred to this operator.

Withdrawal of these vehicles commenced when the decision was made not to replace the compressed natural gas tanks on these vehicles, in 2013 changes were made to the system to lower the pressure in the system, thus giving the vehicle more time in service while not having to goto the expense of replacing the tank system. However in mid 2016 withdrawals commenced based off the age of the gas tanks on the vehicle, once a system was life expired, the vehicle was withdrawn. Tanks were sometimes swapped during a vehicles during it's service life meaning that withdrawal was not necessarily in delivery order.

Final months
With further franchising of State Transit activities in the future and the likelihood of more orders for vehicles powered by compressed natural gas being placed in the future being remote. The current outlook is a move to electric and hybrid vehicles being the future for bus operations – in State Transit’s operating area more than likely full electric buses would be the future.
In an effort to simplify operations for any future operator of region 9, which takes in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, which before March 2021 had two depots with CNG facilities, it was decided to turn the gas off at one of these depots and convert Waverley to 100% diesel operation. The Mercedes Benz O500 fleet would be split between Ryde and Port Botany. Waverley’s O405NH allocation kept on operating after the younger O500’s had been moved on. Bus 1328 was the last and operated the 09:40 400 service from the Airport to Bondi Junction on 9th March 2021.
Waverley’s allocation was migrated across to Port Botany as replacement Volvo’s arrived at Waverley from Mona Vale, Port Botany’s O405NH allocation had dwindled down to a handful. These buses saw further service from Port Botany up until the 31st March 2021, with 1328 operating the 11:01 302 from Redfern to Eastgardens. Ryde's allocation was dwindled down also, however as school term 1 wound up on the 1st April 2021, the final four 1397, 1399, 1401 and 1405 were set aside as spares, then used on an enthusiasts tour. The final revenue service trip for the State Transit O405NH fleet was performed by bus 1401 on the route 507 Meadowbank to Gladesville at 18:02 on 1st April 2021.
After this, four continued to operate out of Transit Systems depot at Leichhardt. These buses being 1117, 1150, 1288 and 1301. However the majority of these were withdrawn on 30th April 2021, with 1288 remaining on the road out of Leichhardt depot after this date.

Forms part of an Olympic display, preserved in all over ad livery marking the 20th Anniversary of the Sydney 2000 Olympics - #MySydney2000

The first bus produced by Custom Coaches for the Government operator since the Leyland Worldmasters of the mid 1950's, it bares body plate STA001, however it initially was 1108, to mark the 2000 Olympics it was renumbered 2000 for this, it entered service as (2000) m/o 2000. Then re-reg m/o 1108 after Olympics, back to m/o 2000 in 11/00.		12/20 W
