Routes were taken over from Graylines (Merrylands Bus Service) in 1978.

For historical information see here. Challenges Coachlines Pty Ltd (and related agency Challenge Travel) were taken over in late-2003 from Bob Stephens with four coaches. These initially ran in Challenge livery with dual signage for Hopkinson's and Challenge.

Proprietor Graham Hopkinson passed away on Wednesday 14 September 2011, aged 81. Graham's four daughters continue to operate the business.

After 35 years of operation under the Hopkinson family's ownership, Hopkinsons route bus operations ceased operating in Sydney MBSC Region 3 on Saturday October 12th 2013, after which Transit Systems took over operation of all Region 3 services from Hopkinson's, Oliveri's, Busabout & Westbus (CDC) on Sunday October 13th 2013. 7x Volvo B10B/P&Ds, 5x Volvo B12BLE/CC CB60 Evo IIs and 4x Volvo B12BLE/CC CB80s were passed to Transit Systems and all other vehicles retained for continuing charter operations.

Hopkinsons Transport Pty Ltd, Acc No. 8271, Smithfield sold operations to Kiama Coaches Pty Ltd with 25 vehicles on 1 March 2015. Vehicles have been reaccredited to Kiama Coaches Pty Ltd and related operator Nowra Coaches Pty Ltd, but the business remains trading at Hopkinson's.
