Brothers Eric and Trevor Royle founded Forest Coach Lines at the height of the Great Depression in 1930, when they took over Route 56 from Elias J Jones in March of that year. The business passed down to Bernard Royle and then to a third generation, namely Anthony and David Royle. After 85 years of operation, the Royles sold their family business in December 2014 to Next Capital, an independent Australian private equity firm. David Royle remains involved in the Forest business, while Anthony maintains his position as shareholder of Linq Buslines at East Gresford, and sister sally has sought employment elsewhere.

See here for historical information regarding Royle Bros Pty Ltd, route 56 and the formation of Forest Coach Lines.

Forest took over the Warringah Bus Lines operation from Shorelink (Jim Knox), Mt Kuring-gai as of 1 September 1991. Included in the take over were routes 195 Pymble - Mona Vale and 196 Narrabeen - Elanora - Ingleside, and eleven vehicles (see Forest disposal list). These routes underwent significant changes that commenced 27 July 1992.

Route 583 Pymble - St Ives Wildflower Garden - North St Ives and 584 Pymble - St Ives Chase were taken over from St Ives Bus Services Pty Ltd, Pymble on 6 July 1998 - they were integrated into Forest's existing route network as routes 195 and 196.

Majority shareholding was sold to Next Capital on 9 December 2014. Subsequent additions and acquisitions under the control of Next Capital with Forest Coach Lines branding are listed here.
