This operator uses imported MCW Metrobuses, about 40 were purchased from New World First Bus, Hong Kong after their withdrawal there. Once here in Australia work commenced on refurbishment and 28 were converted to open top (either full or half). Originally the concept was tried in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Cairns, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. However of these only the Perth and Sydney operation have survived (see Perth's fleetlist in the Western Australia section of this website ) City Tour Pty Ltd are the operators of the Perth franchise. In August 2010 a new franchise in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney commenced operations, this is operated by Fantastic Aussie Tours. At the end of November 2010, Citysightseeing purchased the rights to operate the Sydney Explorer and Bondi and Bay Explorer from the State Transit Authority, since that time the word explorer has been appearing on the front of citysightseeing vehicles.

In 2011, Ensignbus, sold their share in Citysightseeing worldwide to their Spanish partner, the Sydney operation is an Ensignbus owned operation and these would be retained (along with other Ensignbus operations around the world). As of January 2013 the operation is being rebranded as "Sydney Explorer" and the Citysightseeing brand being dropped.
