Notes: In the early 1990’s State Transit had 30 Mercedes Benz O305G vehicles in service and they were based at the two Northern Beaches depots, Brookvale and Mona Vale, however elsewhere in the network it became apparent that there was a need for more high capacity vehicles. In the budget of 1992 there was provision for 50 high capacity vehicles, with an announcement of more buses to come. State Transit had been testing various high capacity vehicles since 1990; at first they tested a 3 axle Volvo B10M. In 1992 a Scania K113 with PMC 160 body was acquired and numbered 3399, then 3408 – it had a single front glide away door and high back seats having been ordered by Murrays Coaches in Canberra and used as a day touring coach. This bus was tested all over Sydney and Newcastle; saw some route service on the 184 route. This was soon disposed of and sold to Premier Motor Service in Nowra.
These were the first of the 300 new buses program. As part of the contract, Ansair had to establish a manufacturing facility within New South Wales; the town of Tamworth was chosen for this factory. The first bus to roll off the Tamworth production line was 3431, with another 24 to follow – the other 26 were built at the Tullamarnie factory in Melbourne.

They were delivered to Kingsgrove, Port Botany, Ryde and Willoughby. The first bus, 3411 was allocated to Port Botany in early 1993 with nine to follow. Next was Ryde with ten buses, followed by Kingsgrove with seven, Waverley with eight and the remaining fifteen to Willoughby.
They were the first buses delivered in the State Transit corporate livery.
During that time some buses stayed at the same depot their entire service lives, while others would see service at three of the four depots that operated these vehicles – buses 3411 and 3412 saw service at all four depots. Eventually as Volvo articulated buses were being delivered, the long Scanias were consolidated to three depots, Kingsgrove, Port Botany and Willoughby, with Ryde’s allocation going to Willoughby and Waverley’s to Kingsgrove.
In the years between 1996 and 1998 they received their first refurbishment, there were some issues regarding frame cracks which needed to be addressed , the fabric chosen for the seats proved to be not very well wearing, by 1996 a new fabric type had been developed one which would continue to be used on all new State Transit buses for over the next 20 years of bus deliveries. This was first used in the low floor Scanias that were being delivered from 1996, the high floor Scanias had this retrofitted.
Then again between 2006 and 2009 they were extensively rebuilt and received new destination equipment and all external lights converted to LED style and all new trim on the seats; the poles repainted (these had chipped over the years) and the exterior repanelled returning in the revised corporate STA livery.

They were built as 14.5 metre long rigid buses that seated 61 people, the Mercedes Benz O305G’s seated 69 people but had the articulated joint, which adds extra expense during construction and extra maintenance through it’s life.
However the 17 metre articulated bus is more manoeuvrable than a rigid 14.5 metre bus, also local road authorities placed restrictions on long rigid vehicles which do not apply to articulated buses.
These vehicles were an issue with the drivers union when new, as the drivers award was then worded, a driver of a articulated bus would attract a shift penalty for the driver, the driver of a 14.5 metre one, would not. This was rectified in later years so that both received the shift allowance. Early on there was a fear these would replace the articulated buses.
Also they could not navigate The Spit bends on the southern side without crossing into the next lane – this made them impractical for use on the Northern Beaches.
Region 6 Franchised
On 1st July 2018, the services in the Sydney Metropolitan Bus Service Contract for Region 6, services operated out of Burwood, Leichhardt, Kingsgrove and Tempe depots were transferred to Transit Systems West Pty Ltd. With this, 10 Scania L113 buses were transferred from Kingsgrove depot

Withdrawal of these vehicles commenced in late 2016 with the class leader 3411, then picked up pace in 2018 and 2019 with the last batch withdrawn from Willoughby in November 2019 – this depot having the largest fleet of these vehicles over the time they were in service. 3447 was found to have extensive rust before it was sent to refurbishment so was withdrawn. 3422 suffered an engine bay fire in Darlinghurst in 2012.

Final Run Thursday 5th December 2019, bus 3454 on the 9:01 am inbound 272 from North Willoughby to Wynyard .
