| Notes: | There were two orders for these vehicles, originally the first 200 which had the desingation PDR1A/1 and another order for 100 more - which was later cut back to 24 being PDR1A/2. The first batch were bodied along side single deck Leopards. The Atlanteans were plagued with both operational and industrial troubles and thus had a farily short life with the government operator - it was not uncommon in the 1970's to pass Chullora and see many in storage, the last batch of 24 were stored for six months before commencing service. Like the Mark 2 Leopards, these were the first buses to be delivered in Mardarin Blue and Rivera White livery, however in an attempt to differentiate the single and double deck vehicles, the cabs on the Atlanteans were painted matt brown and the indicators gave off a 'beep', the Leopards had a dark blue cab (a colour that continued through to the delivery of the "Mark 5" Mercedes Benz O405), there was a periscope arrangement which allowed the driver to observe upstairs and an automatic counter system showing the number of vacant upstairs seats when there were less than ten available. It was also decided during the early 70's that the double deck fleet would be numbered up to 1499 (allowing for a future order of double deck vehicles - which never eventuated). Due to industrial issues surrounding the withdrawal of conductors as well as reliability issues with the vehicles themselves, Atlanteans were often stored at Chullora bus works or stored at depots for months (in a few cases years) on end With a short government career, these vehicles served private operators for much longer than with the organisation that originally ordered them in either country areas or operators on the fringes of major centres primarily as school buses, during the period when these vehicles were being disposed of dealers were busy importing vehicles from the United Kingdom for sale in Australia with a degree of success, so it would not be uncommon to see a Sydney Atlantean in service alongside another Atlantean from the United Kingdom. Given the number of vehicles built and their short government service, these buses were dispersed all over Australia. The last operator of note with these vehicles was Horizons West of Perth Western Australia that at one point had 14 in service, with the last few being withdrawn in late 2013. Other operators of note were Kirklands of Lismore with 19 buses and Blue Ribbon Coaches of Newcastle with 23 buses, while in Sydney, Calabros of Bonnyrigg and Crossways of Hurstville each had 3 buses each. The Leyland Leopard's proving more popular to the metropolitan operators Unknown units are in the 9 thousand series. |
