Commencing operation in 1949 as part of the Northern territory administration with semi trailer school buses following the sudden demise of a contractor services continued to increase and upon the Northern Territory gaining self government in 1978 the Darwin Bus Service oficially came into existance. The fleet has seen AEC Reliances, Hinos, Leyland B21s,and now MAN rigids and Volvo artics have become the mainstay of the fleet.
Services continue to expand with many services contracted out over recent years with the Darwin Bus Service retaining a number of key routes and introducing articulated buses on the heavily patronised Route 10.

Darwin's urban bus service is operated under the name Darwinbus. On Darwin Bus Service vehicles the name is in black while Buslink vehicles have 'Darwin' in black and 'bus' in brown. Each bus has its owner's name or symbol on both sides of the vehicle on the skirt behind the rear axle. Darwin Bus Service vehicles have the 'dbs' logo on the brown skirt, while the Buslink name (also in white) appears on the dark blue skirt of that operator's vehicles.

Darwin Bus Service and Buslink were initially allocated specific routes but this is now no longer the case.
